Research

Currently, I am working with Victor Kathan Sarker under Dr. Kazi Abu Sayeed to design and develop iClassroom as my final year thesis. I am also developing Chameleon, a design framework for the web platform to assist people with disabilities.

Previously, I have come up with a novel approach to design and develop a dual language clock and got a paper published on the subject at the 4th IEEE ICCSIT conference, in Chengdu, China, June-2011

Digital Bangla Clock

The Seven-segment display is well recognized for portraying English digits. But little work has been done in implementing Bangla language digits. In this paper, a microcontroller-based digital Bangla clock has been constructed with ATmega32, and its software is written in C. The clock is reliable, portable, and fully functional, complete with an alarm system. In our clock, Bangla digits are displayed accurately with a 10-segment display. The clock is also functional in dual language mode, capable of displaying both English and Bangla. The ʽheartʼ of this clock is a microcontroller unit (MCU) and the ATmega32 microcontroller is chosen due to its availability in the local market. Software for the clock is written in C. Chameleon: An Adaptive User Interface Design Framework for Web Pages

From the beginning of computer-human interfaces, designers always designed user interface assuming that they are going to be used by an able-bodied person, who has typical perceptual and cognitive abilities. Web interfaces such as websites have not progressed beyond this constraint. Therefore, a person with vision impairment or colour-blindness, for example, may suffer in using currnet user interfaces. We believe a solution of this mismatch of the personʼs effective abilities and the assumptions underlying the interface design can be achieved by using our adaptive user interface design framework for web pages- Chameleon. This particular design framework allows end-users to customize web pages according to their needs and also offers and adaptive front-end of the web pages which changes its appearance based on the traffic and their requests for personalized user interfaces. Chameleon is very easy to use, and allows designers to produce web pages in a very conventional way. < Read more > : PDF

iClassroom : Toward an interactive classroom

According to teaching philosophies, many would believe true education can be given only when the teaching is student-centered and where the teacher serves as the "guide on the side", rather than the "sage on the stage", as is the case in teacher centered philosophies. So when it comes to student-centered education, ways of interactions between mentor and students are very important. Wwhen we consider ways of interaction between students and teachers, we think the classroom itself can play a role. Thatʼs why we are proposing iClassroom, an where the classroom will be intelligent and interactive. In this proposed classroom there will be an interactive whiteboard and an intelligent system which will be able not only to detect the presence of human beings in the room but also be able to identify them. The classroom will additionally provide the control panel for electrical devices present in the classroom and also an auto attendance system where the time log of each student present can be recorded. The classroom will also have the intelligence to control electrical devices such as ACs, fans or lights, to be turned off when nobody is inside the class room and enabled once more when someone enters the room.
